HEIN delivered the Hein House Addition at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice for Hospice Care Ottawa, creating a dedicated residential hospice wing at the organization’s Kanata site. The single-storey addition expanded the existing day hospice into a full-service hospice facility, providing purpose-built space for live-in hospice care, short-term respite, family support, and community programming.
Located at 110 McCurdy Drive near Maple Grove Road, Hein House was designed to support a peaceful, home-like environment for residents and their loved ones. The addition includes private hospice residence suites, amenity areas, office space, and family-oriented spaces that let loved ones stay close, rest, and spend meaningful time together. Each suite was planned with privacy, accessibility, and connection to the surrounding gardens in mind.
The building is a single-storey, wood-framed structure with exposed timber framing and carefully considered architectural finishes. Its scale, materiality, and interior character balance the functional requirements of a healthcare environment with the warmth and comfort expected in a residential hospice setting.
The project holds a particularly meaningful connection to HEIN. Hein House was named in honour of the late Roland Hein, one of our company’s founders, who played an important role in planning and developing the project. HEIN was proud to build a facility that carries his name and reflects his contribution to the community.
The completed Hein House wing strengthened Hospice Care Ottawa’s ability to serve families in Ottawa’s west end by providing a calm, supportive environment for people receiving hospice palliative care and the loved ones who accompany them.
