HEIN delivered the Queensway Carleton Hospital Acute Care for the Elderly Unit under a Lump Sum delivery method, completing a 26,000 sq. ft. interior fit-up within the hospital’s Ottawa campus. The project transformed vacant shell space into a new 34-bed, state-of-the-art Acute Care for the Elderly Unit, developed as a pilot project in Ontario to support specialized geriatric care.
The unit was designed for seniors who may need additional support during a hospital stay, including help with mobility, recovery, memory-related challenges, or the transition back home. Unlike a standard inpatient unit, the ACE Unit was planned around the day-to-day needs of elderly patients and their families, with spaces that support safety, comfort, independence, and clear connection to care teams.
The fit-up created a purpose-built hospital environment with patient rooms, accessible washrooms, wider circulation areas, common spaces, family-oriented amenities, and dedicated clinical support areas. Features such as clear wayfinding, natural light, handrails, rest areas, anti-slip flooring, non-glare finishes, and elder-friendly room layouts help make the unit easier and safer for patients to navigate and use.
Construction was completed within a fully operational hospital, requiring close coordination with Queensway Carleton Hospital to maintain existing services for patients, staff, and clinical departments throughout the work. Infection control, access, hospital workflows, building services, and construction sequencing all had to be carefully managed to minimize disruption to ongoing operations.
The completed ACE Unit introduced a dedicated environment for elderly care at Queensway Carleton Hospital, supporting the hospital’s ability to provide specialized care while helping patients maintain dignity, comfort, and independence during hospitalization and recovery.
