HEIN delivered the John G. Mlacak Centre library expansion and renovation for the City of Ottawa under a Lump Sum delivery method, completing a LEED Silver project at the Ottawa Public Library Beaverbrook Branch in Kanata. The work included a new 17,000 sq. ft., two-storey steel structure addition, along with a complete interior renovation of the existing 7,000 sq. ft. public library.
Located at 2500 Campeau Drive, the Beaverbrook Branch forms part of the broader John G. Mlacak Centre, a community hub serving residents with library, recreation, seniors’ programming, and gathering spaces. The project expanded and renewed one of Ottawa Public Library’s busiest branches, creating a brighter, more flexible environment for reading, learning, technology access, public programming, and community use.
The addition gave the library a stronger civic presence, with expansive curtain wall glazing, sunshades, exposed timber framing, masonry, aluminum composite panels, and Synstone panels. Inside, the renewed branch added public meeting rooms, small group work rooms, expanded children’s space, increased seating, and open, light-filled areas designed to support the changing role of the modern public library.
The completed project was recognized with a 2015 Ontario Library Association Library Architectural and Design Transformation Award. With its expanded public space, improved community amenities, LEED Silver certification, and award-winning design, the Beaverbrook Branch renewal helped transform a long-standing Kanata library into a more welcoming and adaptable civic destination.
