HEIN delivered Carleton University’s Health Sciences Building under a Lump Sum delivery method, completing the construction and fit-up of a major new academic and research facility on Carleton’s Ottawa campus. The 128,000 sq. ft., eight-storey building is constructed using a post-tensioned concrete structure and was developed to support the university’s growing Health Sciences and Neuroscience programs.
The building brings together teaching, research, laboratory, office, and student spaces within a purpose-built science facility designed to encourage collaboration across disciplines. It includes five levels of laboratories and associated support spaces, one level of vivarium space, imaging suites, offices, student workstations, shell space for future growth, and a two-level lecture theatre. A connection to the adjacent Steacie Building also integrates the facility with Carleton’s broader campus network.
The project required extensive structural and technical coordination, particularly for the post-tensioned concrete structure and the demanding mechanical, electrical, laboratory, and building-service requirements of research environments. Specialized systems serving the laboratories and vivarium had to be carefully coordinated with the building structure, architectural finishes, and academic spaces throughout construction.
The exterior is clad in architectural precast concrete and curtain wall glazing, giving the building a contemporary institutional presence while supporting the performance requirements of a modern science and research facility.
For HEIN, the Health Sciences Building reflects the planning and execution required to deliver highly technical institutional construction on an active university campus. The completed facility strengthened Carleton’s capacity for health sciences education and research while providing students, faculty, and researchers with specialized, flexible spaces designed to support future growth.
