BUILDING SINCE 1988
Founded in Ottawa in 1988 as Mueller-Hein Corporation, HEIN began by providing general construction services throughout Eastern Ontario. Since then, the company has grown to provide construction management, general contracting and design-build services to clients across Ontario.
Through that growth, relationships have remained central to how HEIN operates. Our employees work closely with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors to solve problems, coordinate decisions and keep projects moving.
More than three decades later, HEIN remains firmly rooted in Ottawa and the communities it has served since the beginning.

MOMENTS THAT DEFINED HEIN
HEIN’s name, leadership and ownership have changed as the company has evolved. These four milestones mark the key transitions that shaped the company we know today.
Founded in Ottawa
Mueller-Hein Corporation is founded in Ottawa by Roland Hein and Helmut Mueller, establishing a general construction company serving clients and communities throughout Eastern Ontario.
R.E. Hein Construction
Following Helmut Mueller’s retirement, the company becomes R.E. Hein Construction, carrying its established reputation forward while continuing to grow across Ontario.
A New Generation
Following Roland Hein’s passing, ownership and operations transition to the employee shareholders, with Mark Dalton joining the company as President and helping lead its next chapter.
HEIN
The company reorganizes as wholly employee-owned and operated, strengthening its commitment to shared ownership, accountability, and creating a clear path for succession and the future of HEIN.
Building for the Future
As HEIN continues to grow, Mark Dalton transitions to CEO and Shawn Berube becomes President & COO, advancing succession planning and the company’s next generation of leadership.
A COMPANY WE ALL HELP SHAPE
A Personal Stake
Employee owners share directly in the success and long-term value of the company.
A Broader Perspective
Ownership encourages people to think beyond their individual role and consider what is best for HEIN as a whole.
Continuity by Design
Employee ownership helps keep experience, leadership and knowledge within the company as HEIN evolves.
CONTRIBUTING BEYOND THE PROJECTS
HEIN’s connection to community goes back to its earliest years. Our founder, Roland “Roly” Hein, helped lead the construction effort behind what was then Roger’s House, now Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice. Roly took on the role of coordinating the build, working with contractors, trades and suppliers as Ottawa’s construction community came together to contribute their time, materials and expertise to the project.
That same sense of responsibility continues to shape how HEIN approaches community involvement today. Through volunteering, fundraising and support for local initiatives, our team continues to contribute beyond the projects we deliver. We believe being part of a community also means finding meaningful ways to give back to it.
